Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module will be offered on the new BA Arts programmes. As part of the new BA , a pathway in Linguistics is being introduced. Linguistics modules are very popular electives and attract large numbers of registrations. A high number of students opt for a linguistics focussed final year project. As the modules are taught in English they are very popular choices also with Erasmus and study abroad students. These modules will all be made available as options on the current BA in Applied Languages, thus increasing student choice. The introduction of these new LI modules is therefore designed to meet the institutional strategic objectives of increased student choice and increased opportunities for internationalisation. Linguistic variation is one of the key components of studying language in society; this module will offer students an introduction to this topic by focussing on the Irish sociolinguistic context in contemporary and historical perspective.

Following a general introduction to studying language and variation, the module will focus on four main themes: Irish-English The Irish language Irish traveller language The new languages of Ireland

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

Faculty teaching the module are all members of the Centre for Applied Language Studies and are among the most research active in the Faculty. The study of Irish-English is a research strength of CALS, as part of the Discourse Society and Identity cluster, and UL is home to the Limerick Corpus of Irish English. Students taking the module will therefore have access to the latest research in this area. The two hour tutorial reflects the fact that project work is a key feature of the learning. Students will complete a number of assignments both individually and in groups, which will develop their collaborative capacity. Within these assignments, there will be room for individual tailoring and creativity will be actively encouraged.
